Animal Offerings

In addition to the carved wooden figures, the Oseberg burial contained the remains of 15 horses, six dogs, and two oxen. Horses symbolized status, mobility, and possibly ritual functions. Dogs may have acted as guardians or companions in both life and death, while the presence of oxen suggests sacrificial practices and highlights the considerable wealth necessary to include such livestock in a burial.
