Origin: Area within the Islamic caliphate, or another Arabic-speaking region in the Middle East.
Dated: Viking Age deposition (grave context); inscription style is Kufic Arabic.
Manufacture: Silver finger ring with a glass stone bearing a Kufic Arabic inscription (interpreted as “for Allah” / “to Allah”).
A silver ring set with a glass inset inscribed in Kufic Arabic - a rare, direct material link between Birka and the Arabic-speaking world. The Swedish History Museum notes an origin within the Islamic caliphate sphere (or another Arabic-speaking Middle Eastern region). In a Scandinavian grave, the ring becomes more than jewelry: it is a portable sign of contact, carried across networks that connected the Baltic to the wider world.
Distance:
• Direct: ~3,500 km (Baghdad → Birka)
• Route estimate (Volga corridor): ~4,400 km
