Cowrie shell pendant

Origin: Cowries occur in waters around the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian Ocean; the museum notes Mediterranean intermediaries where shells were sometimes reshaped into pendants before travelling north.
Manufacture: Hole drilled at the upper edge for hanging.

A cowrie shell is “exotic material” made by nature: unmistakably foreign in the Baltic. The Swedish History Museum notes cowries’ natural range in Arabian/Indian Ocean waters and suggests a journey that could include Mediterranean intermediaries where shells were modified into pendants. Worn on the body, the cowrie becomes a visible marker of distance - proof that Viking-Age exchange carried not only silver, but also objects valued for rarity and symbolism.

Distance:
• Direct: ~4,362 km (Red Sea → Endre/Gotland) up to ~7,622 km (Maldives → Endre/Gotland)
• Route estimate (via Eastern Mediterranean → river corridors → Baltic): ~4,700 km up to ~9,100 km
