The Buddha bucket

Found: Oseberg ship burial mound (near Tønsberg)
Excavated 1904–1905 by Gabriel Gustafson and Haakon Shetelig. The monumental ship burial contained grave goods exceptionally rich though disturbed in antiquity; burial dated to AD 834.

In the early 1900s, archaeologists opened the Oseberg mound and uncovered a ship burial of extraordinary preservation and status. Among sleighs, carts, carved woodwork, and textiles, lay this striking bucket - an object whose style signals connections across the North Sea. The “Buddha” comparison became a modern nickname; the real story is the elite appropriation of exotic prestige goods into a Norwegian funerary display.
