Cowrie shell pendant
Found: Endregårda, Endre Parish (Gotland)
Gotland’s burial record is unusually rich for long-distance goods, reflecting the island’s strategic position in Baltic sea-lanes.
Whole cowries - rare to find so far north - appear as personal ornaments in grave contexts, suggesting they were worn in life and then carried into death.
Here, the shell’s meaning is twofold: it is evidence of far-reaching exchange, and a locally curated symbol - an object whose material origin lies thousands of kilometres away, but whose final message was shaped in a Gotland grave.
